Department of Motion Pictures & Still Photography
Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University
About Department
The Department of Motion Pictures and Still Photography was established in 1988 as the 5th department of the Faculty of Communication Arts, after having previously operated under the Department of Mass Communication. The department’s core mission is to develop students’ knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience in both the art and science of film and photography. It emphasizes adaptability to the rapidly changing social and cultural contexts at both national and global levels, as well as to advancements in production and communication technologies — aiming to produce graduates who are well-rounded academically and professionally, and who contribute meaningfully to society.
The department offers courses that encompass both the scientific and artistic dimensions of film and photography. On the theoretical side, students gain knowledge in film theory, research, aesthetics, planning, analysis, and film criticism. On the artistic side, the curriculum provides in-depth studies in screenwriting, directing, cinematography, film editing, still photography, and the application of computer technology in film production. The program is designed with an integrated and interdisciplinary approach, enabling students to develop the skills and creativity necessary to produce cross-media works.
